Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Preview

The Pirates came back from an early deficit in the Thursday opener of this series, ultimately triumphing 6-5 in 12 innings. Bryan Reynolds bagged a homer with two hits and two RBI in that one. On Friday Pittsburgh posted 10 hits on the way to a 7-2 win. Ke’Bryan Hayes notched two hits, two RBI and two runs in the victory.

As starter for the Saturday matchup, the Pirates are going with Jared Jones. He’s the team’s No. 3 prospect and will be making his first MLB start. Last year with two different teams in the minors, Jones posted a 5-9 record with a 3.85 ERA over 26 games (25 starts).

Miami Marlins Betting Preview

The Marlins had a pretty sketchy pitching outing in the Thursday matchup, with eight walks given up between seven different hurlers during the loss. In Friday’s game Miami was down 4-1 by the end of the third and couldn’t do much from there. Tim Anderson, Bryan De La Cruz and Jake Burger each had two hits in the loss.

It’ll be Ryan Weathers in the starting pitcher slot for the Marlins on Saturday. Across the 2023 regular season, Weathers went just 1-8 with a 6.55 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) and striking out 43 in 57.2 innings. In his career, Weathers is 5-15 with a 5.88 ERA in 46 games (31 starts).

  • The Marlins have led after 3 innings in each of their last five day games against National League opponents that held a winning record.
  • The ‘Inning 1 UNDER 0.5 runs’ market has hit in each of the last seven day games between the Pirates and Marlins.

Pittsburgh Pirates Team Facts

  • The Pirates have lost each of their last seven day games following a road win.
  • The Pirates have covered the run line in each of their last 10 road games against the Marlins following a win.
  • The Pirates have led after 3 innings in each of their last four games against opponents that held a losing record.
  • The Pirates have trailed after 5 innings in each of their last six day games at LoanDepot Park against National League opponents.
  • The ‘Inning 1 UNDER 0.5 runs’ market has hit in each of the Pirates’ last six day games.

Pirates vs Marlins Prediction

I’ll take a stab on the Pirates here. What Pittsburgh does in game two will depend quite a bit on Jones’ performance, though. Provided Jones can notch a handful of solid innings—and if the offense gives him some cushion—the Pirates should be in a reasonable spot down the stretch.

In Friday’s game the Pirates jumped on starter AJ Puk early, ultimately dinging him for four earned on three hits and six walks in just 2.0 innings. Pittsburgh used just three pitchers themselves, with Ryder Ryan and Josh Fleming coming out of the bullpen for 4.2 innings and one earned combined. I like the Pirates to keep it going in Saturday’s game; they’re looking pretty good so far.
