The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers meet Sunday in MLB action from American Family Field. This will be the finale in a three-game weekend series. On Friday the Brewers eked out a victory. In the Saturday game Milwaukee kept it up with a shutout win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates gave up three runs in the first inning Friday, eventually falling 5-4. In the Saturday matchup Pittsburgh couldn’t find the scoreboard on six team hits in a 5-0 loss. Starter Mitch Keller lasted 5.0 innings with four earned on five hits and three walks.
For the starter job in the Sunday finale the Pirates will go with Luis Ortiz. Over his seven games (six starts) this year Ortiz is 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA and 20 Ks in 33.0 innings. Ortiz is 1-5 with a 4.59 ERA in 11 career games (10 starts).
Milwaukee Brewers
Over on the Milwaukee side, they managed just five team hits on Friday but still pulled off the victory. On Saturday the Brewers scored twice in both the third and fifth innings. Wade Miley managed 5.0 frames in the start with two hits and two walks.
It’ll be Freddy Peralta in the Sunday start for Milwaukee. Across 13 starts this year Peralta is 5-6 with a 4.73 ERA and 75 Ks in 70.1 innings. Peralta is 35-23 with a 3.95 ERA in 129 career games (80 starts).
The Pirates are 75-157 in their last 232 road games and 4-9 in their last 13 in game three of a series. Pittsburgh is 16-39 in their last 55 versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Brewers are 5-1 in their last six Sunday games and 1-4 in their last five in game three of a series. The over is 5-1 in Milwaukee’s last six Sunday games.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll take a stab on the Pirates in this one. Probably not touching it, though. Ortiz was a little shaky in a loss to the Cubs his last time up (5.1 innings; four earned) but did fairly well versus the A’s in the start prior—despite giving up 10 hits. As for Peralta, he’s 0-2 in his last trio with a combined nine earned runs in 16.0 frames. On Saturday Pittsburgh couldn’t find much success on offense. The good news is that the pen combined for 3.0 innings, one hit, one earned and four Ks. If Pittsburgh can get another solid pitching performance here I think they’ll be fine.
