The San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets meet Saturday in MLB action from Citi Field. This will be the second installment in a three-game weekend series. In the Friday opener, the Giants eked out a comeback victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants took on the Blue Jays this week, losing two of three games. In the opener versus the Mets, San Francisco scored three in the top of the eighth inning during a 5-4 comeback win. Starter Alex Cobb lasted 5.0 innings with two earned on six hits and zero walks.
For the starter job Saturday it’ll be San Francisco’s Anthony DeSclafani. In his 16 starts this year DeSclafani is 4-7 with a 4.28 ERA and 69 Ks in 90.1 innings. DeSclafani is 54-55 with a 4.14 ERA in 177 career games (167 starts).
New York Mets
Over on the Mets’ side, they were only able to get one of four games from the Brewers this week. On Friday New York had a 4-2 lead after the seventh but couldn’t hang on. Carlos Carrasco lasted 5.0 innings with two earned on five hits and three walks.
Justin Verlander will make the start for the Mets on Saturday. Verlander is 2-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 10 games this year. He has 49 Ks in 57.0 innings. Verlander is 246-137 with a 3.26 ERA in 492 career games.
The Giants are 4-1 in their last five Saturday games and 4-1 in their last five in game two of a series. San Francisco is 13-4 in their last 17 overall.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 52-25 in their last 77 at home versus a right-handed starter and 6-18 in their last 24 overall. New York is 2-6 in their last eight Saturday games.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably go with the Mets here. Also probably not touching it, though. Verlander had an up-and-down outing versus Houston (7.0 innings, four earned in a loss) back on June 20, but in the other two of his last three starts he’s got just one earned in 11.0 combined frames. On Friday New York saw a rough inning from David Robertson (two earned; two hits; one walk) and couldn’t power out the win. I like the Mets to rally behind Verlander, but I’m staying away.
