The Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Wednesday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park. This will be the final installment in a three-game series. The Orioles managed a shutout win in the opener, then on Tuesday Philly evened it up with an extra-innings victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Baltimore posted both their runs in the first inning Monday on the way to a 2-0 shutout win. In the Tuesday game two, the Orioles had a 2-1 edge in the tenth but ultimately blew it in a tough 3-2 defeat. Connor Greened opened the pen game with a pretty clean inning, one hit and two strikeouts.
For the Wednesday game three starter, the Orioles will send out Keegan Akin. Over his 23 games (16 starts) this year, Akin has a 2-10 record with a 6.93 ERA and 76 Ks in 89.2 innings of work.
Over on the Phillies side, they couldn’t get much going on Monday in the opener, notching just four team hits. On Tuesday, Philly posted nine team hits in their walk-off victory. Adonis Medina put up 3.2 innings with one earned, four hits and two walks in the start.
Starting pitcher for the Phillies on Wednesday will be Zack Wheeler. In 200.1 innings of work this year Wheeler has 161 hits, 69 runs (63 earned), 16 homers allowed, 43 walks, 231 Ks and a 2.83 ERA.
The Orioles are 31-75 in their last 106 on grass and 4-10 in their last 14 in game three of a series. Baltimore is 14-38 in their last 52 overall as well.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 6-2 in their last eight in game three of a series and 2-8 in their last 10 Wednesday games. The under is also 4-1 in the Phillies’ last five in game three of a series.
PICK: I’m sticking with the Phillies. Wheeler had a string of bad starts back in August, but he’s righted the ship since then. In his last three, Wheeler has put up just two earned on 14 hits across 17.2 innings of work. As for Akin, he’s given up 11 earned over his last three starts in a span of 14.0 innings. I like Wheeler to win the starter matchup here and put Philly in a nice spot for a victory.
