The Cubs played the Washington Nationals over the weekend. Chicago lost 5-1 on Saturday but won the other three games for a series win. In the Monday opener versus Philly, the Cubs took a 6-2 loss. Caleb Kilian did the bulk of the pitching work on 5.2 innings and five earned runs.

Over on the Phillies’ side, they took on the New York Mets in their weekend set. Philly won 12-2 Friday then dropped the next pair 6-3 and 2-1. On Monday the Phillies notched 11 hits in the victory. Starter Aaron Nola logged 6.0 innings and two earned runs with seven Ks.

Philly will send out Tanner Banks to start Tuesday. This year Banks is 2-2 with a 3.78 ERA and 75 Ks.

Philadelphia Phillies vs Chicago Cubs Prediction

I’m probably leaning toward the Cubs. Steele only has one game in his pocket since coming off the Injured List: 2.2 scoreless frames, two hits, and three walks against the A’s. Prior to his absence, however, Steele had four earned over the course of 12.0 innings in a pair of wins.

On Monday the Cubs fell behind 4-0 by the end of the third inning and had no shot from there. Overall the offense wasn’t terrible but they couldn’t keep up with the Phillies’ output. Chicago only used three pitchers, however, so the pen should be in good shape behind Steele. I’m probably staying away from this one but the Cubs should have a reasonable chance on paper.
