The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Colorado Rockies meet Tuesday in MLB action from Coors Field. This will be the second installment in a three-game set between these teams this week. In the series opener Monday, the Rockies bagged a shutout win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Pittsburgh played a four-game set versus the Cardinals this weekend and had some success, winning three of those matchups. In the Monday opener versus the Rockies, the Pirates out-hit Colorado 6-5 but still lost 2-0. Tyler Anderson posted 5.0 innings with two earned on five hits and a walk in the defeat.
For the starting pitcher in the Tuesday game, the Pirates will go with Chase De Jong. In his 23.2 innings this year, De Jong has 25 hits, 13 earned runs, five homers allowed, 11 walks, 23 Ks and a 4.94 ERA.
Over on the Rockies’ side, they played the Brewers over the weekend and were swept 5-4, 10-4 and 5-0. In the Monday game, Colorado notched a run in the third and fifth innings on the way to a tight victory. Kyle Freeland was great on 5.0 innings, three hits and a walk.
For the Tuesday starting pitcher job, the Rockies will send out German Marquez. In his 90.1 innings of work this year, Marquez has 77 hits, 42 runs (40 earned), seven homers allowed, 39 walks, 89 Ks and a 3.99 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 17-36 in the last 53 overall and 20-55 in their last 75 road games. The Pirates are 1-5 in their last six Tuesday games and the over is 32-15-5 in their last 52 in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rockies are 19-43 in their last 62 with the total set at 7.0-8.5 and 2-5 in their last seven Tuesday games. The over is 4-1 in Colorado’s last five in game two of a series and the under is 5-2 in their last seven Tuesday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with the Rockies here. Marquez gave up eight earned on 12 hits versus the Reds on June 12, but otherwise has posted one earned run or fewer in six of his last seven starts. As for De Jong, he’s had a couple of sketchy outings but can deal pretty well when he’s rolling. I like Marquez to put up another good game here and put Colorado in a nice spot.
