The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres meet Monday in MLB action from Petco Park. Arizona just finished up against the Brewers. After wins in two of the first three games, on Sunday the Diamondbacks took a four-run win. As for the Padres, they played the Dodgers over the weekend. San Diego split the first pair in that set, then on Sunday in the rubber match the Padres lost by five runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Arizona took a 5-0 win Thursday and a 2-1 win Friday, but lost to the Brewers 8-6 Saturday. In the Sunday matchup the Diamondbacks out-hit Milwaukee 8-3 in a 5-1 victory. Starting pitcher Zac Gallen put up 7.0 clean innings, two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

For the starting pitcher job on Monday the Diamondbacks will call up Ryne Nelson for his MLB debut. Nelson is sitting on a 5.43 ERA in 136 innings in Triple-A this year.

Over on the Padres’ side, they beat the Dodgers 7-1 Friday then lost 12-1 in a blowout Saturday. In the Sunday rubber match San Diego fell in a 9-4 result. Mike Clevinger gave up five earned on four hits and two walks in 3.1 innings during the start.

As starter for the Monday matchup the Padres are sending out Blake Snell. In 18 starts this year Snell is 6-7 with a 3.87 ERA. In 93.0 frames total he has 40 earned, 82 hits, 41 walks and 124 strikeouts.

The Diamondbacks are 4-0 in the last four in game one of a series and 5-2 in their last seven Monday games. Arizona is 38-88 in their last 126 road games.

Meanwhile, the Padres are 5-1 in their last six versus a lefty starter and the under is 10-4-1 in the last 15 Monday games. The over is 4-1 in San Diego’s last five versus a lefty starter.

PICK: I’m probably staying with the Padres here but not touching it. It’ll be interesting to see what Nelson can do in his debut, but the Diamondbacks probably won’t leave him out there for too long. In any case, Snell coughed up six earned in 3.1 innings versus Cleveland back on August 24, but he bounced back well with 6.0 clean frames on four hits and three walks in a win over San Francisco in his last outing. I like Snell to keep it going in this opener. The line’s probably too thick to mess with, however.
