The Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres meet in MLB action from Petco Park on Friday night. Let’s dive into the odds, starting pitching matchup, history and make a prediction for this game.
Odds
The Padres are -280 home favorites while the Nationals are +235 road underdogs. The total for this game is set at 7.5 runs.
Starting Pitching Matchup
Patrick Corbin will start for the Nationals and is 4-8 with a 4.89 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. Joe Musgrove will start for the Padres and is 5-2 with a 4.22 ERA and 48 strikeouts this season.
Matchup History
San Diego’s 8-6 win over the Nationals on May 25th, 2023, made it four wins in the last five head-to-head meetings for San Diego.
Trends
Washington is 5-17 in their last 22 games overall and 1-4 in their last 5 games following a loss while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 series-opening games. San Diego is 2-5 in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the over is 3-0-1 in their last 4 series-opening games.
Pick
I’m backing the over here. Normally Patrick Corbin is good for 3-4 runs in a start despite him actually pitching well as he has at times this season, but while Joe Musgrove is capable of tossing a solid outing himself, he does have a fairly high ERA at home. Now some of that has to be taken into account from that offensive outburst in the Mexico City series in April, but this is still far too low of a total, especially when you factor in the bullpens. I’ll roll with the over here.
