The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants meet Sunday in MLB action from Oracle Park. This will be the final installment in a three-game weekend series. The Padres eked out a one-run win in the Friday opener. On Saturday, San Diego kept it going with another one-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Diego scored two runs in the 10th inning in the Friday opener, hanging on for a tense 8-7 victory. On Saturday in game two, the Padres posted six hits in a tense 2-1 victory. Joe Musgrove lasted 7.0 clean frames in the start with four hits and three walks.
Starter for the Padres on Sunday will be MacKenzie Gore. This year the lefty Gore is 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 32 strikeouts.
Over on the Giants’ side, they fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the Friday game but it wasn’t enough to get the win. On Saturday, San Francisco couldn’t find much offense outside of Joc Pederson’s two hits and Wilmer Flores’ homer.
For the starter gig in the Sunday game, the Giants will send out Alex Wood. Across his seven starts this year Wood is 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA. Over 34.1 innings of work Wood has 38 hits, 15 earned runs, 10 walks and 35 Ks.
The Padres are 5-1 in their last six Sunday games and 13-27 in their last 40 versus the NL West. San Diego is 33-67 in their last 100 road games versus a lefty starter.
Meanwhile, the Giants are 13-4 in their last 17 Sunday games and 54-21 in their last 75 as a favorite. San Francisco is 37-18 in their last 55 in game three of a series.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Giants. Wood was a bit sketchy in his last outing versus Colorado (at Coors), with 4.1 innings, six hits, three earned and a walk. His previous outing at home versus the Rockies was much better with 5.1 clean innings, seven hits and two walks in a win. I like Wood to bounce back and post a quality start here; the San Francisco offense should be able to give him a lift.
