Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

The Phillies took on the Washington Nationals over the weekend, winning the first two games 4-0 and 5-2. Philly missed out on the sweep with a 3-2 loss Sunday, though. On Monday versus the Cardinals, the Phillies gave up a couple of runs in the bottom of the ninth but eventually prevailed 5-3 in 10 innings. Starter Spencer Turnbull finished with 6.0 clean frames, two hits, one walk and six Ks.

In the starter slot for the Tuesday game two, the Phillies are sending out Zack Wheeler. Over his two games so far this year Wheeler is 0-1 with a 0.75 ERA and 15 Ks in 12.0 frames. Wheelers is 87-64 in his MLB career with a 3.42 ERA in 229 total starts.

St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview

Over on the Cardinals’ side, their weekend set was against the Miami Marlins. St. Louis similarly won the first pair before a Sunday loss 10-3. On Monday the Cardinals showed some late life but couldn’t complete the comeback. Miles Mikolas gave up two earned on six hits and two walks in 6.2 innings during his start.

It’ll be Sonny Gray in the starting pitcher role for the Cardinals on Tuesday. It’ll be his season debut following a hamstring injury in Spring Training. In his career, Gray is 98-85 overall with a 3.47 ERA in 279 games (270 starts).

Phillies vs Cardinals Prediction

I’ll lean toward the Phillies. I could go either way here, though. Wheeler is just 0-1 this year so far, but he’s pitched very well during a pair of tough-luck outings. In each game Wheeler went 6.0 innings and has given up a total of one earned on eight hits and one walk. Philly will be set up well if Wheeler can keep it going—the bats just need to help him out. It’ll be interesting to see what Gray can do on the other side as well.

On Monday versus the Cardinals, Philadelphia coughed up two runs in the bottom of the ninth and nearly blew the game. The offense eventually came through however, thanks to 10 team hits. Brandon Marsh notched a homer with two hits and two RBI, and Trea Turner had a nice outing with three hits and one RBI. Philly could use a better effort from the bullpen this time (4.0 innings; three earned) but I think they’ve got a pretty good shot in game two. Should be a fun matchup regardless, though.
