The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in an AL East division matchup in MLB action from Tropicana Field on Sunday afternoon.

The New York Yankees will look to rebound from a 4-0 loss to the Rays in Saturday’s matchup. Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu each had a double while Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks and Gary Sanchez each had a base knock as well as the Yanks mustered up just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Domingo German took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five over four innings of work. Jordan Montgomery will start here for the Yankees and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. In his career, Montgomery is 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA and 26 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to build on their win over the Yankees on Saturday. Francisco Mejia led the way with two RBIs while Austin Meadows and Randy Arozarena each had a solo home run as well to round out Tampa Bay’s scoring as a team in the win with Arozarena going 3 for 5 at the dish in the win. Brett Phillips added a double while Joey Wendle had two hits. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Willy Adames each had a base hit as well to finish off the offense for the Rays in the winning effort. Chris Archer threw 2.1 scoreless innings in the start, allowing three hits while striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Andrew Kittredge got the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. Brent Honeywell Jr. is expected to make his debut here as the Rays’ opener and hasn’t pitched in the minors since 2017.

New York is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Tampa Bay is 4-0 in their last 4 home games against a team with a losing record and 47-15 in their last 62 home games while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall. New York is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

It’s hard to really guess what we’re going to see from the Rays, but it looks like Michael Wacha will follow up Honeywell Jr. as the long man following the opener. With that said, Montgomery still pitched a solid outing in his first start and even if it’s only one inning, it’s hard to invest in a pitcher like Honeywell JR. who has had four arm surgeries and not seen regular season action since 2017. Nice story, but I think the Yankees are out for blood here. I’ll take the Yankees and lay the juice on the road.
