Tigers vs Mariners Pick – MLB Predictions & Odds 5/12/23

The Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers meet Friday in MLB action from Comerica Park. The Mariners are coming off a series versus the Rangers. Seattle lost two of those three games. Seattle Mariners 

The Mariners bagged a 5-0 win over the Rangers in the Tuesday game, but otherwise lost 2-1 Monday and 4-3 Wednesday. In the finale, Seattle was out-hit 13-7 and gave up three runs in the third inning during the loss. 

For the starter job in the Friday matchup, the Mariners will send out Marco Gonzales. In his six starts so far Gonzales is 2-0 with a 4.70 ERA and 23 Ks in 30.2 innings. Over his career Gonzales is 63-48 with a 4.10 ERA in 159 games (151 starts). 

Detroit Tigers

Over on the Detroit side, they lost 2-0 to the Guardians on Tuesday, but managed a 6-2 win Monday and a 5-0 shutout in the finale otherwise. In game three, the Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez lasted 7.0 innings with four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. 

The Mariners are 6-0 in their last six after an off day and 4-0 in their last four road games. Seattle is 7-3 in their last 10 overall. 

Meanwhile, the Tigers are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 7-2 in their last nine overall. Detroit is 38-81 in their last 119 Friday games. 

ANDREW’S FREE PICK 

I’m sticking with the Mariners here. This should be a pretty interesting starter battle regardless, though. Gonzales had a rough game versus the Blue Jays in late April (3.0 innings; five earned), but in the other pair of his last three starts he’s got 11.0 combined innings with four earned on 10 hits and four walks. As for Boyd, he similarly had trouble with Baltimore (5.2 innings; six earned) but has five earned in 11.0 innings over his other two starts otherwise. I like this one to be low-scoring initially, with Seattle powering out a close win.
