Atlanta didn’t have a ton of trouble in the Monday opener of this series, taking an 8-0 shutout victory. On Tuesday the Braves posted multiple runs in three different innings in an 8-2 win. Kyle Muller put up 4.2 innings with two earned on six hits and a walk in the start.
For the starter job in the Wednesday matchup, the Braves are sending out Jake Odorizzi. In his 20 starts so far this year Odorizzi is 5-6 with a 4.61 ERA. In 97.2 innings he’s got 79 Ks.
Over on the Nationals’ side, they gave up five runs in the sixth inning alone during the Monday loss. On Tuesday Washington was out-hit 10-6 in the defeat. Starting pitcher Paolo Espino finished with 5.0 innings, four earned, five hits and five Ks.
As starter for the Wednesday matchup the Nationals are going with Josiah Gray. Over 27 starts this year Gray is 7-10 with a 5.17 ERA. In 142.2 innings he’s managed 82 earned on 134 hits and 64 walks with 152 Ks.
The Braves are 73-31 in the last 104 overall and 35-16 in the last 51 versus the NL East. Atlanta is 17-8 in the last 25 road games.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 24-52 in the last 76 overall and 30-71 in their last 101 at home. Washington is 17-44 in their last 61 in game three of a series.
PICK: I’m going with the Braves. Odorizzi needs a bounce-back start here, though. In his last outing Odorizzi put up eight earned in 4.0 innings on 10 hits and three walks versus Philly. He’d given up five earned in 8.1 combined innings prior, so Odorizzi has some work to do. As for Gray, he’s got 12 earned in his last 14.1 innings so he’s got room for improvement as well. Should be a competitive starter matchup here.
