The San Antonio Spurs welcome the Houston Rockets to town on Christmas Day.
Head to head, the underdog is 13-6 ATS in the last 19 meetings. The Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU win of more than 10 points, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games. The Rockets on the other hand are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. loss, but just 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Western Conference.
You might be wondering why there is a line out for this game even though James Harden is questionable with that on-going ankle injury. Well, see, it's Christmas Day and Vegas wants as much action as possible and as early as possible. As you all know, NBA rules on Christmas Day and having the line released a couple of hours before tip-off just isn't a smart move from a money stand point. In any case, I'm going to treat this article as if Harden does play because I think he will.
The San Antonio Spurs might be 22-6 on the season, but one area they haven't been that great in is covering the spread, especially at home. The Spurs are coming off a 112-99 home win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night, a game in which they covered the 11.5 point spread. However, they had failed to cover the spread in each of their previous five games at the AT&T Center and that included a 112-106 defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets. Now since that time, the Rockets have actually had a losing record as they have dropped six of their past 11 games as they continue to deal with players coming in and out of the lineup with various injuries.
Take of this what you will, but San Antonio is just 5-8 against the spread at home this season compared to Houston who is 7-7 ATS in their 14 away games to date. Only one of their past four meetings has been decided by seven points or greater and that game went into overtime, so it could very well of been none.
What more can you say. If Harden plays I like the Rockets to keep this one close and if he doesn't, then I think the Spurs could potentially run way with things...
