The Los Angeles Lakers play host to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night in the preseason opener for both teams.
Not much is expected of the Los Angeles Lakers heading into this season, especially in such a crowded Western Conference, but I’m a little bit more bullish on the purple and gold than most people. When I say ‘bullish’, I don’t think that LA will contend for a playoff spot of anywhere close too, but I do think they will more than 30 games, which is where Vegas has set their expected win total for the upcoming season. If the Lakers can win 27 games with a bunch of misfits being coached by Mike D’Antoni last season, then there’s no reason to think they can’t improve on that mark by at least three games. It remains to be seen how effective Kobe Bryant will be after sitting out most of the last two seasons through injury. Will Kobe mesh well with this new cast of players and under new head coach Byron Scott?

There are always one or two surprise teams in the NBA every season and I think the Denver Nuggets could be one of them this year. The Nuggs were hit hard by the injury bug last season which in-turn saw them win just the 36 games, 21 less than the season before. Denver gets everyone back from injury including Danilo Gallinari and JaVale McGee amongst others, while Aaron Afflalo is back for his second go-around with the Nuggets after he was traded from the Orlando Magic. Denver have great depth at every position and if they can make the Pepsi Center a fortress again after struggling their last season, I see them pushing for 48-50 wins a possible playoff berth.
You wouldn't expect to see a whole lot from Kobe tonight and I think the Lakers will fall short as all there new pieces are still getting used to playing with each other...
