Australia and Germany meet Saturday morning in the 2020 Olympics in a basketball meeting at the Saitama Super Arena. Australia are 2-0 in these games with wins over Nigeria and Italy. Germany is fresh off a win over Nigeria and needs a win to improve its chances of advancing.
Australia is riding a seven-game winning streak overall and has a chance to win Group B. In the winning effort, Australia shot 45.7 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three. Jock Landale led Australia with 18 points and seven rebounds while Patty Mills had 16 points and six rebounds. Nicholas Kay was the third double-digit scorer and Aron Baynes grabbed seven rebounds. Defensively, Australia allowed 50 percent shooting from the field and 32 percent shooting from three. Australia is coming off a competitive victory over the Italians, the type of win that should provide even more confidence. While we knew Australia had a chance to medal, you can argue the Aussies have been the most impressive team up to this point.
Germany is sitting with a 1-1 record after losing to Italy and beating Nigeria. In the winning effort, Germany shot 54 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from three. Johannes Voigtmann led Germany with 19 points and seven rebounds while Moritz Wagner had 17 points and three rebounds. Danilo Barthel was the third double-digit scorer and Maodo Lo grabbed two rebounds. Defensively, Germany allowed 50.7 percent shooting from the field and 47.2 percent shooting from three. Germany played a clean game its last time out and now has to be kicking itself for falling apart in the fourth quarter against Italy. Germany hasn’t made it to the knockout stages of the Olympics since 1992.
Australia has won two of the three meetings against Germany. However, Germany won the last meeting against Australia, which came in a 2019 friendly. The Aussies last win over Germany came in the 2013 Stankovic Continental Cup.
Australia is the better team here and should win, but Germany has been quite competitive and will be playing for a spot in the next round. If there was ever a game for Germany to get up for, this is it. We also can’t ignore that Germany was outplaying the Italians before falling apart in the fourth quarter, the same Italy team that took Australia to the wire.
Australia should win, but give me Germany and the points.
