The Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts clash Saturday in NFL preseason action from Bills Stadium in Buffalo, New York. The Colts are coming off a 9-8 season in 2021, finishing second in the AFC South. As for Buffalo, they finished 11-6 and atop the AFC East. Indianapolis boasted seven Pro Bowl players and five AP All-Pro names last season, but also failed to match their 11-5 record from 2020. The Colts would ultimately finish 9-8 and miss the playoffs thanks to a shocking loss to the lowly Jaguars in the final week of the year.
2022 marks the fifth year under Colts head coach Frank Reich; he’ll try to get Indianapolis back into the playoffs after their one-year hiatus. It’s going to be a stout schedule, however. The Colts have such opponents as the Chiefs, Patriots, Raiders and Cowboys in store this year.
Over on the Bills’ side, they had a solid regular season in 2021. Buffalo didn’t quite match 2020’s 13-3 mark, but the 11-6 record was enough for a consecutive division title and the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. The Bills had the number-one ranked defense statistically as well.
The 2021 postseason started out great for Buffalo. They were able to overcome the rival Patriots 47-17 in the Wild Card Playoffs and things were looking promising. In the Divisional Playoffs game versus the Chiefs however, the Bills would fall in overtime 42-36.
PICK: I’m probably still leaning Bills here, but preseason games are essentially coin-flip propositions anyway. We likely won’t see much (if any) from a good chunk of the starters; this will be a depth matchup. That said, Buffalo seems well-prepared for another run at the title in a pretty “blah” AFC East. The Bills probably won’t get a ton of pushback from the likes of the Jets and Dolphins. As for Indianapolis, they’ve got some tough weeks ahead but the team should be right in the mix along the way. This preseason opener should be a fun way to preview both teams ahead of an interesting season.
