The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants clash Sunday in a week 1 NFL showdown from Nissan Stadium.
The New York Giants will be out to shake off another frustrating season for Big Blue, finishing at 4-13 overall, missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. The Giants are still rolling with Daniel Jones as their QB1, but Tyrod Taylor is a capable backup option in case of emergency. Saquon Barkley returns as the top dog in New York’s backfield, while Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney welcome second-round pick Wan’Dale Robinson from Kentucky to suit up in another shade of Blue in the Giants’ receiving group. On defense, the Giants made their splash at 5th overall by taking Kayvon Thibodeaux to anchor New York’s defensive line and Azeez Ojulari will suit up at another defensive end spot. Xavier McKinney and and Adoree’ Jackson lead the Giants’ secondary.
The Tennessee Titans will be out to build on another successful season under Mike Vrabel in 2022, finishing last season at 12-5 and winning back-to-back division titles since the early 1980s when the Titans were the Houston Oilers. The Titans would earn the top seed in the playoffs, but the stay in the postseason was short-lived as the Titans lost to the eventual AFC champion Bengals in the divisional round. Ryan Tannehill’s back after throwing for 3,734 yards, 21 TDs and 14 interceptions last year and Derrick Henry is also back after rushing for 937 yards and 10 TDs last season. The Titans will try to revamp the receiving corps, after losing Julio Hones to free agency and shockingly dealing A.J. Brown on draft day after leading Tennessee in receiving last year, but the Titans think they have their new guy in Alabama first-rounder Treylon Burks. Kevin Byard and Harold Landry are both back after finishing 1-2 in tackles last year and will try to once again anchor a rush defense for the Titans that was 2nd in the NFL last season.
New York is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 week 1 matchups. Tennessee is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 week 1 matchups while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 home games.
I get the case to be made for either side here, and while I do lean Tennessee’s way here, I think the better play is the under. The Titans played in their fair share of low-scoring battles down the stretch last season, and the Giants aren’t necessarily built to light up the scoreboard and we haven’t seen anything up to this point to suggest otherwise. I think this is a game that gets near 40 points or at 40 points max, so give me the under in this one.
