Two games since the release of head coach Peter Laviolette and the biggest problem has still persisted for the Flyers. They did defeat the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night but they've scored just three goals in these two games and just can't figure out how to put the puck in the net. Friday night was another awful night early in the season for this club as they got a late second period goal from Max Talbot to tie the Phoenix Coyotes 1-1, only to watch as Phoenix would tally just before the intermission to go up 2-1 and eventually win by that score. To add insult to injury the Flyers lost forwards Scott Hartnell and Vincent Lecavalier in the game to undisclosed injuries that will almost certainly keep them both out of Saturday night's contest and could have them both missing up to a week. Looks like it's going to get worse before it gets for Philadelphia. If it ever gets better.
Detroit got of to a quick start this year but since opening the season with two straight wins they've dropped a pair. They also played the Coyotes on Thursday night and were defeated by a score of 4-2. Joakim Andersson and Jonathan Ericsson scored less than a minute apart in the second period to give the Red Wings the lead but they were outworked the rest of the way. Detroit allowed the next three goals and were outshot 38-30 for the game, including 13-8 in the final period. Jimmy Howard made 34 saves in the loss. The good news for Detroit is that a couple of goals should be enough for them to find a way to pick up a win against a Philadelphia club that just can't put the puck in the net right now.
