Detroit Red Wings vs. Florida Panthers - 1/26/14

Florida Panthers (20-24-7) at Detroit Red Wings (23-18-10)

NHL Hockey: Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 5:00 pm (Joe Louis Arena)

The Line: Detroit Red Wings -142 / Florida Panthers +129 --- Over/Under: 5 See the Latest Odds

The Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings will play for the fourth time this season when they meet in the Joe Louis Arena Sunday afternoon. The Panthers surprisingly lead the series 2-1, although the Red Wings won the most recent matchup near the end of December.

Detroit is just trying to tread water while many of its key players continue to nurse injuries. And it’s done just that, winning three of its last four games and beating some tough competition in the process such as Chicago and Montreal. The Red Wings have also found their offense all of a sudden, scoring a combined nine goals in the last two games. Before that, they couldn’t buy a goal, scoring just one goal in four of six games.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Florida Panthers - 1/26/14

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Florida continues to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the league. One minute it’s on a massive losing streak and can’t do anything right, the next it’s blowing the doors off of a quality team such as Pittsburgh. With a 20-24-7 overall record this season, you should know by now that you can’t trust this team as far as you could throw it. Especially considering the fact it went back to its losing ways Friday night against Colorado.

However, the fact that the Panthers have had success this season against the Red Wings scares me. And not just this season, Florida has actually split the last six games at three apiece. So, while Detroit should win this matchup, I’m done trying to figure either one of these teams out, which is why I’m going with the total.

The under is 12-3-1 in the last 16 games between these two teams. It’s also 5-1 in the Panthers last six games coming off of one days rest and is 8-2-2 in the Red Wings last 12 games against Eastern Conference competition.

Neither team is a scoring machine, so give me the under in this matchup.
