Two teams that could use a win right about now will meet Saturday night in a battle between the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils. These teams have played twice already and the Devils have won both meetings.
Washington has lost three of its last five games mainly because the offense has been so inconsistent. The Capitals were recently shutout by the Islanders, only scored two goals in the game against Columbus and then lost a heartbreaker in an overtime game against Detroit. One way they’re finding offense is by taking advantage of the power play, as they’ve scored four power play goals in their last four games. However, other players must step up now that Alex Ovechkin is leading Team Russia in the Olympics.

The Devils have lost four of their last six games and are coming off of four straight overtime games. In fact, New Jersey has now played seven overtime games in 2014. Speaking of little offense, New Jersey isn’t getting any. The Devils have scored only 11 goals in their last six games. Goalie Cory Schneider is doing a great job of protecting the net as of late, but it’s impossible to win games when you’re getting little to no support.
Although Washington may be playing the better hockey recently, the Devils have absolutely owned this series, winning seven of their last eight meetings against the Capitals. Washington is decent at home with a 16-10-2-2 record but sometimes teams just have another team’s number and that may be the case here.
With New Jersey getting plus money and the goaltending being rock solid lately, I’ll gladly take the Devils and call it a night.
