The Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet in NHL action from the PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday night.
The Washington Capitals will look to bounce back from a 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh in their last matchup. Nicklas Backstrom leads the Caps in scoring with 18 points coming on 7 goals and 11 assists while Alex Ovechkin has 13 points with 5 goals and 8 helpers in 9 games this season. John Carlson and Tom Wilson each have 12 points with Carlson posting 4 goals with 8 assists while Wilson has 5 goals and 7 helpers. Jakub Vara has 4 goals and 5 assists for his 9 points while Justin Schultz and T.J. Oshie each have 7 points coming on 2 goals and 5 assists this season. Vitek Vanacek continues to see the bulk of action in goal for the Caps, picking up 5 wins with a 3.26 GAA in 11 appearances this season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to build on their 6-3 win over Washington in their last matchup. Bryan Rust leads the Pens in scoring with 13 points coming on 5 goals with 8 assists while Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby each have 12 points with 5 goals and 7 assists. Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin and Teddy Blueger each have 7 points with Malkin logging 3 goals with 4 assists while Blueger’s got a pair of goals with 5 assists and Letang has 7 assists for the Pens this season. Tristian Jarry and Casey DeSmith continue to split Pittsburgh’s goaltending, with Jarry going 3-5 with a 3.82 GAA in his 8 appearances while DeSmith has 4 wins and a 2.84 GAA this season in his 6 appearances.
Washington is 0-4 in their last 4 games overall and 0-4 in their last 4 road games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games as an underdog. Pittsburgh is 7-0 in their last 7 games as a favorite and 150-69 in their last 219 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Washington is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
I get the case that can be made for Pittsburgh here as the Penguins are 5-0 at home so far and the Capitals are just getting by with .500 hockey right now. However, I’m still not sold on this Penguins team as I don’t trust the goaltending and I still think that the Pens are on the decline this year. Washington hasn’t been overly impressive early on, but this is still a team with as much, and arguably more talent than the Penguins side-by-side and I think we’re getting value with the Capitals in this spot. Give me Washington and the plus money here.
