The Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders meet in NHL action from the Nassau Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Buffalo Sabres will look to get some measure of revenge after dropping Saturday’s matchup with the Islanders by a final score of 5-2.
Jacob Bryson opened the scoring for Buffalo early on just :33 into the game and the Sabres would hold the lead going into the 2nd period, a 2nd period that was all Islanders. Mathew Barzal tied the game for the Islanders 3:51 into the second and Brock Nelson gave New York the lead just 1:25 later. Cal Clutterbuck added some insurance 3:29 after that and Scott Mayfield pushed the lead to 4-1 with less than five minutes to go in the middle period. Sam Reinhart pulled a goal back :52 into the 3rd, but that was as close as the Sabres would get as Anders Lee restored the three-goal cushion just 1:23 later. The Islanders would ride the lead to the finish line as Buffalo simply had no answer the rest of the way. Semyon Varlamov got the win for the Islanders to improve to 11-4-3 after stopping 20 of 22 shots faced in the win while Carter Hutton ended up with the defeat for the Sabres after giving up all 5 goals on 29 shots faced in defeat.
Buffalo is 4-9 in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record and 41-99 in their last 140 games played on no rest while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 road games. New York is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and 20-6 in their last 26 games played on no rest while the over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 home games. The over is 2-13 in the last 15 meetings between these two teams at the Islanders.
I was on the under on Saturday and the only thing that blew up in my face was the thing that could always happen in a Sabres road game, and that’s that the Sabres just get pummelled on the road. I’m not sure which goaltender both teams go with on Sunday, but I think the trend of goals aplenty comes to fruition again here, so I’ll side with the over in this spot.
