In this article, we will formulate a Detroit Red Wings vs Washington Capitals prediction for this NHL game on Sunday, December 29th at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Let’s take a look at the prediction for this NHL matchup.

Detroit Red Wings Betting Preview

The Detroit Red Wings are 13-18-4 this year after they lost to Toronto by a score of 5-2 in their last game. Detroit allowed the first five goals in the game, but they scored two goals in the third to avoid the shutout. The Red Wings outshot Toronto by a total of 25-23, won 58.1% of the face-offs, and went 1-3 on the power play in the game. Detroit got goals from Raymond and Edvinsson, while Talbot stopped 16 out of 21 shots in the loss.

Prior to that game, the Red Wings lost three games in a row against the Blues and Canadiens (twice). Detroit has scored 2.54 goals per game and they have allowed 3.31 goals against per game, while also going 22.8% on the power play and 68.8% on the penalty kill this season. Lucas Raymond has led Detroit with 14 goals, 20 assists, and 68 shots on goal, while Alex Lyon is 5-5-0 with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage this year.

Washington Capitals Betting Preview

The Washington Capitals are 24-9-2 this season after they defeated Toronto by a score of 5-2 in their last game. Washington was tied at two in the second period, but they scored the last three goals for the win. The Capitals were outshot by a total of 37-32, won 47.3% of the face-offs, and went 1-1 on the power play in the game. Washington got goals from Dowd, Mangiapane, Ovechkin, Wilson, and Chychrun, while Thompson stopped 35 out of 37 shots in the win.

Prior to that game, the Capitals lost to the Bruins by a score of 4-1 but did beat the Kings and Hurricanes before that. Washington has scored 3.68 goals per game and they have allowed 2.62 goals against per game, while also going 21.6% on the power play and 83% on the penalty kill this season. Dylan Strome has led Washington with 11 goals, 28 assists, and 63 shots on goal, while Charlie Lindgren is 10-7-0 with a 2.61 goals against average and a .903 save percentage this year.

Detroit Red Wings vs Washington Capitals Prediction

Detroit comes into this matchup after losing their last four games and they have looked pretty bad in their last three. The Red Wings have been outscored 14-3 in those three games, but I do think we will see a better effort here, as they have had a few days with their new coach. Washington has been one of the top teams in the NHL to start this season, but they will be on a back-to-back after playing Toronto on Saturday. I do think the coaching change is going to give the Wings a boost, especially as they get more time with him, so give me Detroit to get the win here.
