Ecuador is welcoming Peru to Olimpico Atahualpa in round 8 of the South American World Cup qualifications. Ecuador has ended their winning streak just a few days ago against Brazil. Peru is not in good form, and they have now extended their losing streak to 4 games.
Despite losing in their last game against Brazil on the road, Ecuador is still in 3rd place in the standings with 9 points, 13 scored goals, and 8 conceded goals. In that game against Brazil, Ecuador has had only 35% of ball possession, 0 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and 79% of the correct passes. Ecuador was actually defending well in this game, but it was only a matter of time before they conceded a goal, and it happened in the 65th minute, and once again in the 94th minute. Ecuador has lost this game 2-0. Ecuador is an average team in South America, but I think they have won the previous games only because they caught those teams on a bad day. Ecuador’s only mission is to stay in the World Cup zone in these qualifications, and that is as low as 5th place, and I think they can do it, but it will be tough.
Peru is definitely the worst team in South America right now, and they have scored a single goal in their last 3 games while conceding 7 goals during this streak. In these qualifications, Peru is in the last place with only 1 point, 4 scored goals, and 13 conceded goals, and even though they can still get to the World Cup spot, something would need to change drastically for that to happen. In their latest game against Colombia at home, Peru has had 49% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and a solid 90% of the correct passes. Peru has conceded a goal and a red card in the first half, and 2 more goals in the second half. In the 59th minute, Colombia has conceded a red card, and Peru now had the chance to score a goal, but they are just too weak of a team to do it. Peru has lost this match 0-3. Estrada is still the leading goalscorer for Peru with 3 goals while Plata and Mena added 2 goals each. Peru is struggling massively, and they will not be qualifying for the World Cup, and as far as the upcoming Coppa America goes, I don’t think Peru will make any impact.
Peru has had some success against Ecuador, but their bad form will be crucial in this game. Peru is not scoring goals, their defense is terrible, and for that reason, I will side with Ecuador at home in this one.
