Southampton and Aston Villa face off on Friday in an English Premier League showdown at St. Mary’s Stadium. When these two teams faced off in January it was Aston Villa that came away with the 1-0 victory. 

Southampton currently sits in 14th place in the standings having picked up 11 points so far this year. Southampton has been inconsistent this season, but they are coming off a big victory in the last game. The defense was strong against Watford giving up zero goals, and they had just enough offense to come away with the victory. Southampton has scored nine goals total while the defense is giving up 12 goals. James Ward-Prowse and Armando Broja have been the top goal scorers this season with both guys finishing with four goals. 

On the other side of this matchup is Aston Villa who currently sit in 15th place in the standings having picked up 10 points. Aston Villa played better to start the season, but they are really struggling as of late losing four games in a row. In the last game against West Ham, the defense really struggled giving up four goals. Aston Villa has scored 14 goals total while the defense has given up 19 goals. The top offensive player has been Danny Igns and he has scored three goals and added another two assists. John McGinn and Ollie Watkins have also been good with both guys scoring two goals.

Southampton has won more lower-scoring games, while Aston Villa has given up a ton of goals, so these are two very different styles of soccer. In this game it’s going to be Aston Villa’s defense that is an issue, and that will lead to plenty of goals. The safe play is the over 2.5, but the over 3.5 should also have a few dollars thrown on it.
