Ecuador and Brazil face off on Thursday in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying game Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado. When these two teams faced off in June of 2021 in the Copa America it was Brazil that won 1-1.
Brazil currently sits in 1st place in the CONMEBOL standings having picked up 35 points. Brazil is one of the best teams in the world, but they haven’t been as dominant in their last few games. Two games ago against Colombia, they only scored one goal, and in the last game against Argentina, the final score was 0-0. Brazil only managed two shots on goal, and if they want to get the job done in this game the offense is going to need to be a whole lot better. Dani Alves is back for the qualifiers and that is a big addition for the squad.
On the other side of this matchup is Ecuador who currently sits in 3rd place in the standings having picked up 23 points. Ecuador has picked up at least one point in each of the five games and that included a big victory over Mexico. In the last game El Salvador, they had an early lead with a goal in the 18th minute, but it wasn’t enough. In the 43rd minute, Ecuador gave up a goal and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. They had 56 percent of the possession in that game but couldn’t find the second goal. In this game if Ecuador wants to come away with the victory the defense is going to need to be strong.
Brazil’s offense hasn’t been as dominant and I don’t think they are going to magically start scoring lots of goals in this game. I expect both teams to find the back of the net a max of once and that is going to lead to a lower-scoring game. Back the under to cash.
