FC Union Berlin is hosting VfL Wolfsburg at An der alten Forsterei in round 8 of the German Bundesliga. Union is an average Bundesliga team, and even though they are pretty high in the standings now, I don’t think they will stay there for much longer. Wolfsburg has gotten a bit sloppy lately, and I think this international break has done them some good.
Union is on a 3-game winning streak in their competitive matches, and they have conceded only 1 goal during that stretch. The only game Union has lost lately was a friendly game against St. Gallen. In their last Bundesliga game against Mainz, Union has had 48% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and 71% of the correct passes. This was far from Union’s best game, but even like this, they were able to get a win. After losing 1-0 at halftime, Union has scored 2 goals in the second half, and they have won this game 1-2. Awoniyi has scored 5 goals for Union so far this season, while Giesselmann added 2 goals. Max Kruse has added 3 assists. There aren’t any notable injuries for Union Berlin. So far so good for Union Berlin, but I think playing in the Conference League is stretching them thin, and that could be a problem for Union Berlin.
Wolfsburg has really cooled off after their great start to the season, and they are now without a win in their last 5 games. Thanks to this bad streak, Wolfsburg has sunk to 5th place with 13 points, 9 scored goals, and 8 conceded goals. In the Champions League, Wolfsburg has 2 draws, and their chances to advance past the group stage are still good. Wolfsburg was playing against Borussia M’gladbach in their last Bundesliga game, and they were solid with 52% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and 80% of the correct passes. Despite having a decent game, and despite scoring a goal in the first half, Wolfsburg has lost this match 1-3 at home. Weghorst is the leading goalscorer for Wolfsburg with 3 goals, while Nmecha and Baku added 2 goals each. Wolfsburg is just not used to playing in two competitions, but I think they should focus on Bundesliga because I don’t think they can do much in the Champions League.
Union still hasn’t lost in Bundesliga so far this season, and they are a tough team to beat at home. Wolfsburg is solid, but it will take a lot from them to win this, and I don’t think they can at the moment. This game reeks of a draw to me, and I will take it.
