Lazio is welcoming Empoli to Stadio Olimpico in round 20 of the Italian Serie A. Lazio hasn’t been the greatest team this season, but they have been playing well recently, and they are still in the Europa League hunt. Empoli is just behind Lazio in the standings, and they have been in surprisingly good form lately.
Lazio is on a 2-game winning streak in Serie A, and they have also been fantastic in the attacking end in those 2 games with 6 scored goals, but they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 7 Serie A games. Offensively, Lazio is quite solid with 39 scored goals, and Immobile is their leading goalscorer with 13 goals. Fortunately for Lazio, Immobile has recovered from injury, and he will be in the lineup for this game. There aren’t any injured players for Lazio at the moment, they are free of covid, and they need to keep playing well if they want to reach the Champions League. It will be the long and hard second half of the season for Lazio, and I’m not sure they have the quality to reach the Champions League, but they definitely will try.
Empoli has been outstanding as of late, and they have only 1 loss in their last 7 games, and it was against Milan just before the winter break. Thanks to this great streak, and thanks to their solid offense, Empoli is now in 9th place with 27 points. Defensively, Empoli is not great, far from it, but their offense has been compensating for it, at least for now. The biggest problem for Empoli is they haven’t played a game in a couple of weeks, and when you play well, you certainly don’t want to go on a break. Fortunately for Empoli, they don’t have any injuries. Pinamonti is still the leading goalscorer for Empoli with 7 goals. A lot of smaller teams do well in the first half of the season, but as the season goes on, smaller teams start losing games, they stop playing well consistently, and they start sinking in the standings, and I think Empoli will be the same. Empoli does have the offense to compete, but I don’t think they can do it much longer with their bad defense.
The trends are heavily on Lazio’s side in this matchup, but Empoli has been in solid form, and we will see if that will continue here as well. I will take a risk here and hope that Empoli scores a goal.
