Mexico and France are clashing in Round 1 of Group A in the Olympics 2021 soccer tournament. For years now Mexico has had some fantastic young players and it’s no different on this tournament as well. France also has some perspective and talented young players, but they also have a couple of experienced players that will keep them in line.
Egypt has won the Olympic tournament back in 2012 against Brazil, while in the 2016 Olympics they have had 1 draw, 1 loss, and 1 win, and unfortunately for Mexico, they haven’t advanced past the group stage. The most known player for Mexico is their goalkeeper, Guillermo Ochoa, the goalkeeper that was in their national team for years, and he has had some fantastic games and results. This will not be an easy group for Mexico, and they also haven’t had a lot of time to prepare, and to play in a tournament without a single friendly game to work on chemistry is not good. Overall, Mexico has a good team, experience goalkeeper, and a lot of these players are playing for the same teams in the Mexican national league.
France will be led by Gignac, the player who is playing in the Mexican national league, and Thauvin, another player playing in Mexico. The rest of the French players are mostly coming from French Ligue 1, and even though they are young, those players have experienced soccer at the highest club level. In their friendly game against South Korea last week, France was losing in the 62nd minute, but with two late goals, France has turned the score around, and they ended up winning this match 1-2. After France surprisingly got knocked out by Switzerland in the Euro Cup a few weeks ago, it certainly would be nice for them to win the Olympics, but it will not be easy. France has a solid team, and Gignac and Thauvin definitely know most of the Mexican players since they are playing there, but France will need a lot more than the two of them to make an impact on this tournament. These two teams have never met in the past, but according to the bookies, France is the favorite. We know Mexico has a good team, and they usually do well in this tournament, which is why I will take the goals on both sides here.
