The United States women’s national team and the Netherlands face off on Friday morning in a knockout round matchup at the Olympics. The United States finished second in Group G, while the Netherlands was able to win Group F.
The Netherlands have two wins and one draw so far in the Olympics and were able to win the group with a +13 goal differential. In the first game of the tournament, the Netherlands offense was elite, putting up 10 goals and four of those goals came from striker Vivianne Miedema. The defense for the Netherlands in that game wasn’t strong, giving up three goals and that defensive output has to be a bit of a concern heading into this game. The Netherlands in the Olympics have scored 21 goals total which is the most at this point. Miedema is the best player for the Netherlands, and they are probably going to need a goal or two if they want to come away with the victory in this game. Netherlands is also going to need their defense to step up, and not struggle as they have at times during this tournament.
On the other side of this matchup is the United States women who look like they have been sleepwalking so far in this tournament. In the last game against Australia, the United States knew they needed at least a draw, and they came away with the draw. This is a team that has already lost to Sweden, and in the last game against Australia, they didn’t look all that interested in playing. The good news for the United States heading into this game though is they are facing a defense that hasn’t been great, and if they want to win this game, that is something they are going to need to attack.
The United States hasn’t looked great, but that is going to change in this game. The Netherlands defense isn’t good, and the USWNT is going to take advantage of that. I also like the over to cash in this game at 3.5 goals at +135.
