Paraguay and Argentina face off on Thursday night in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying game at Estadio Defensores del Chaco. The last time these two teams played was in June of 2021 and Argentina won that game 1-0.
Argentina currently sits in second place in the standings having picked up 18 points. Argentina is still one of the best teams in all of soccer and they have won eight games in a row that has been finished (the game against Brazil a few games ago was suspended.) In Argentina’s last game they beat Bolivia 3-0 and it was Lionel Messi who completed a hat trick. They had a total of 24 shots and seven went on goal. The defense only allowed seven shots, and only three went on goal. Those three shots didn’t find the back of the net. Over Argentina’s last two games they have scored six goals, while the defense has given up only one.
On the other side of this matchup is Paraguay who currently sits in 6th place in the standings having picked up 11 points. Paraguay has been up and down during this qualifying but they have picked up four points over the last two games. They played to a draw against Colombia before beating Venezuela 2-1. David Martinez opened up the goal scoring in the 7th minute, and they never looked back. They did give up a goal late, but held on to the victory. They actually were outplayed in that game with mostly everything, except the two goals they were able to score.
Paraguay is going to try to go into a defensive shape in this game, but it’s not going to work very well. Argentina’s offense has scored three goals each of the last two games, and the offense is going to be good. I also expect Paraguay will score a goal, and the over 2.5 goals at +115 is going to cash.
