Switzerland and Turkey are facing off at Baku Olympic Stadium in round 3 of Group A for a chance to advance to the next stage in the Euro Cup 2021. Switzerland has 1 positive result in this tournament, and with a win here they will have a chance at advancing to the next stage. Turkey has lost both of their games so far, and they are getting knocked out of the tournament after this game.
Switzerland was solid in both of their games, but if they had a bit more focus in their first game against Wales, they wouldn’t be in this mess right now. In their last game against Italy, Switzerland has had 51% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 2 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and 87% of the correct passes. Switzerland has had a few good chances, but the Italian defense was just too good, and Switzerland has lost this game 3-0. Embolo is the only goalscorer for Switzerland at the moment, while Shaqiri has added 1 assist. I know that Switzerland must win this game, and I think they are good enough to do it, but it will need to be their best performance yet, and only then can Switzerland think about advancing to the next stage, and they will still not be safe.
Turkey has come to this tournament with high ambitions, or at least to advance to the next stage, but all that went away when Turkey lost their game against Wales. Losing to Italy, I get that, but losing to Wales without scoring a goal is just embarrassing. Turkey is a solid team, they have some fantastic players, but even if they win this game, they are still going home. In their match against Wales, Turkey has had 63% of ball possession, a solid 6 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 1 big chance created, and 84% of the correct passes. A lot of good chances, a lot of shots, a lot of corners, and Turkey wasn’t able to use any of it to score a goal. The final result was 0-2 in favor of Wales. Defensively, Turkey has been just horrible with 5 conceded goals in 2 games, but their offense was even worse, and Turkey is still scoreless in the Euro Cup. I think Turkey is aware they are going home, and for that reason, I believe they will make a lot of changes in their starting lineup to give the opportunity to some other players to feel the big stage, but that is it from Turkey.
It’s been a while since the matchup between these two teams, but Switzerland must win this game, there is no plan B. Turkey is done, and nothing is going their way right now, which is perfect for Switzerland who has shown some good soccer in this tournament. I’m siding with Switzerland in this one.
