The United States and Jamaica face off on Thursday in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier at Q2 Stadium in Austin Texas. When these two teams faced off in late July, it was the USA that won 1-0.
The United States currently sits in 3rd place in the standings having picked up five points, but they still aren’t happy with the results they have had. The United States played to draws to start their qualifying against El Salvador and Canada. In the last game Honduras, they finally played to their potential, even if it was just for a half. They fell behind in the 27th minute, and in the first half, it looked like their World Cup dreams were going to take a hit. Coming out of the half it was Antonee Robinson who started the scoring in the 48th minute. Ricardo Pepi, Brendon Aaronson, and Sebastian Lletget all scored goals after the 70th minute to seal the victory and make it look like a dominating victory. Coming away with only one point isn’t going to be good enough for the United States.
Jamaica has picked up only one point so far in the three games they have played. Jamaica has been competitive, for the most part, but that hasn’t resulted in a lot of points. In the first game against Mexico, it was a goal in the 89th minute that led to the loss. In the last game against Costa Rica, they gave up a goal in the 3rd minute that put their backs against the wall. Shamar Nicholson did score a goal in the 47th minute, They only had 42 percent of the possession and two shots on goal, but only one found the back of the net. Two games ago, they gave up three goals to Panama and if they want to come away with a victory, the defense is going to need to be strong. Jamaica doesn’t have the goal-scoring to win a 3-2 type of game.
Jamaica knows they need a good defense to find success in this game, and I expect they will have that. When these two teams faced off earlier this year there was only one goal scored. They might still give up a goal or maybe two, but it won’t be more than that. I expect a 1-0 or 1-1 type of game, and the under 2.5 goals will cash.
