VfL Wolfsburg is hosting Borussia M’gladbach at Volkswagen Arena in round 7 of the German Bundesliga. After a fantastic start to the season, Wolfsburg has cooled off, and they are now without a win in their last 4 games. Borussia M’gladbach is wildly inconsistent this season, and they have only 2 wins so far.
It seems that playing on two fronts is not working for Wolfsburg, and honestly, that was expected. Wolfsburg is a good team, but they don’t have the depth or the experience to compete in the Champions League and Bundesliga. The good news for Wolfsburg is they have lost only 1 of their last 4 games, and they have gotten a positive result against Sevilla in the Champions League earlier this week. Wolfsburg has had only 31% of ball possession in this game, 2 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, 2 big chances created, and only 68% of the correct passes. Wolfsburg got ahead in the 48th minute, but Sevilla tied the score in the 84th minute from the penalty spot, and the final score was 1-1. Wolfsburg is still close to the top of Bundesliga, in 3rd place with 13 points. Wolfsburg does have a few injuries at the moment, but this is still a solid team, especially on the defensive end.
As I’ve mentioned, Borussia has been very inconsistent so far this season, and they already have 3 losses. With 7 points, Borussia is in 11th place in the Bundesliga standings. Despite having some great players in the attacking end, Borussia M’gladbach has scored only 6 goals so far this season, and that is something they need to improve fast. In their latest game against Borussia Dortmund last weekend, M’gladbach was actually a much better team with 56% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, 1 big chance created, and 86% of the correct passes. M’gladbach has had an extra player on the field since the 40th minute, and that one big chance was enough for Borussia M’gladbach to score a winning goal. The final score was 1-0. Zakaria and Stindl have each scored 2 goals for M’gladbach so far this season. Doucoure, Lainer, and Thuram are all injured. I was expecting more from Borussia M’gladbach this season, but there is still time for them to turn this around.
The trends are heavily on Wolfsburg’s side in this matchup, and they are in better form, but quality-wise, these two teams are equal. With Wolfsburg playing just a few days ago, I’m winning to take a risk here, and I will side with Borussia M’gladbach.
