VfL Wolfsburg is welcoming Red Bull Salzburg to Volkswagen Arena in round 4 of Group C of the UEFA Champions League. Wolfsburg is still without a win in the Champions League, but the good news is they have ended their losing streak in Bundesliga. Salzburg is at the top of this group, and it’s been 4 months since their last loss.
Wolfsburg desperately needs a positive result here, not necessarily a win, but a positive result would be nice. Wolfsburg is in last place of this group with only 2 points, but the good news is Sevilla is only 1 point away in 2nd place. In their latest game against Leverkusen on the road, Wolfsburg has had only 34% of ball possession, but 8 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and only 69% of the correct passes. In the attacking end, Wolfsburg has used anything they could have, while their defense was solid. Wolfsburg has won this game 0-2. Wolfsburg has scored only 2 goals in the Champions League so far, and Nmecha and Steffen have each scored 1. The injury list is still quite long for Wolfsburg, but I think they have enough quality to make this group just a bit more complicated.
Salzburg has been excellent so far in the Champions League, and they are deservedly at the top with 7 points. As far as the Austrian Bundesliga goes, Salzburg is dominant there as well, and they have a 12-point advantage ahead of Strum in second place. Adeyemi is the leading goalscorer for Salzburg in the Champions League with 3 goals, while Okafor added 2 goals. There are quite a few injuries in Salzburg as well, but seeing their form right now, I think they are handling it pretty well. Salzburg was playing against Ried this past weekend, and they were a much better team with 70% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and 81% of the correct passes. Despite being the dominant team, Salzburg had to save themselves from a loss after they were losing since the 9th minute. N the 83rd and the 85th minute, Salzburg is scoring two goals, and they are now in the lead. In the 92nd minute, Salzburg has conceded another goal, and the final score was 2-2. I have no doubt Salzburg will advance past the group stage in the Champions League because they have been the best in this group, but if they lose here, their situation could get a bit complicated.
Salzburg has beaten Wolfsburg just a couple of weeks ago at home, but that was a different Wolfsburg. After their win against Leverkusen, Wolfsburg should be filled with confidence, and that will help them a lot. I don’t think Salzburg will lose in this game because they are too good, but I also don’t see Wolfsburg losing.
