Young Boys is welcoming Atalanta to Wankdorf Stadion in round 5 of Group F of the UEFA Champions League. Young Boys is the weakest team in this group, and their form has been terrible lately. Atalanta is finally showing us glimpses of that offense they have, and just in time to secure the next stage of the Champions League.
Young Boys hasn’t won any of their last 4 games while losing 3 of those 4 games, and their defense was just a mess during this streak. Young Boys also hasn’t played a game since November 6th, and that might do them some good, or it might hurt them because they are not in a competitive rhythm. Not only Young Boys is in the last place of this group, but they are also losing the battle in the Swiss Super League where they are currently in 4th place. Theoretically, Young Boys still has a chance to qualify for the next stage, but I think realistically, they belong in the Europa League, and that is where they might end up, maybe. Elia, Moumi, and Siebatcheu have each scored 1 goal for Young Boys in the Champions League. It’s always tough to play against Young Boys on the road because they have artificial turf, but given the form they are in, it might be a bit easier for Atalanta.
Atalanta is in great form right now, they are undefeated in their last 6 games, and they have also gotten their offense going as of late. In their last Serie A game against Spezia at home, Atalanta has had 51% of ball possession, 9 shots on goal, 0 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and 84% of the correct passes. With 3 scored goals in the first half and 2 more scored goals in the second half, Atalanta has won this game 5-2. For the whole last season, and one before that, Atalanta has been playing to always score a goal more than their opponents, and it was working out for them, ad I think they are going towards that once again. There is no player in Atalanta who scored more than 1 goal in the Champions League this season, but they have a lot of different goalscorers. Atalanta needs a win here, with it, they might actually take over the top of this group, and that would certainly take the pressure off of Atalanta before that last game of group stage.
Young Boys was solid at the start of the season, but they have cooled off since, and I honestly don’t think they will be a big threat to Atalanta. Yes, Young Boys might get on the scoreboard, but Atalanta will take the win.
