Jan-Lennard Struff vs. Tommy Paul
May 27, 2021 2:00 pm EDT
Jan-Lennard Struff (4) meets Tommy Paul (6) in the quarter finals of the 2021 Parma Open on Thursday, May 27th 2021.
Will Tommy Paul be able to get a strong win under his belt here as he looks to make it far into a tournament for the first time in a few tournaments as he has slowed down, or will Jan-Lennard Struff be able to come out here and put on a better performance than he did in the second round?
Tommy Paul came through a tight 3 set win over Jiri Vesely, beating the experienced Czech 6-7/7-6/6-3. Tommy Paul was able to keep his mental toughness in check during the tight moments of that match, and that proved to be the difference maker in the end. Paul will be happy with that match and his win, but he will now have to ensure he is still playing a very high level if he wants to get anything going against the big hitter in Jan-Lennard Struff in this quarter final encounter.
Jan-Lennard Struff struggled in his second round match here, beating the local Italian wild card, Flavio Cobolli, in 3 tight sets 6-4/4-6/7-6. The match was expected to be a straight sets victory from Jan-Lennard Struff, but the young Italian held his nerve and was able to get the match to go to a third set. Struff was eventually able to maintain his composure and get the best of his opponent towards the end of the third set, but he cannot afford to lose concentration like this against Tommy Paul.
This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, with this going to be a very tight and exciting encounter in the quarter finals. Both players can come out here and dominate the match on their day, however, I think that this is going to be a tight battle right until the end from both players. I expect them to come out here, and extend this match to a third set where they will most likely go to a tiebreak. I think Jan-Lennard Struff’s powerful game will eventually give him the win and make his way to the semi finals here in Parma.
