Alexander Zverev vs Kei Nishikori
June 6, 2021 12:00 am EDT
Sixth seeded German Alexander Zverev will face unseeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 French Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday June 6th, 2021.
A blockbuster is on our hands here at Roland Garros as Alexander Zverev meets Kei Nishikori in a very even matchup. Both players are highly experienced and are in good form. Who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at Roland Garros?
Alexander Zverev has truly announced himself as a top player, and is a contender for the title here in Paris. The German star won the title in Madrid, impressively defeating Rafael Nadal at home which would have given him a lot of confidence. However, he struggled early on here, falling two sets to love down in the First Round to Oscar Otte. He has recovered well and hasn’t lost a set since, including a straight sets win over Laslo Djere in the Third Round, where he dominated with his serve and backhand, hardly putting a foot wrong. While he should be considered the favorite here, his opponent Kei Nishikori is highly accomplished and is truly capable of causing the upset here if Zverev is not at 100%.
Kei Nishikori is ranked #49 in the world but is a former world #3. The Japanese superstar has fought incredibly hard to reach this stage, with two five set wins over Alessandro Giannesi and Karen Khachanov in his first two matches. He received some much needed rest when opponent Henri Laaksonen retired due to injury in the Third Round, rest which may prove critical here against Alexander Zverev. Nishikori is a great mover and elite defender, and can hang with Zverev from the baseline. His game matches up very well with his opponent’s, and the stage is set for a huge battle here.
This is an incredibly tough match to call, with both players capable of winning. All things considered, I am going with Alexander Zverev here. He has been outstanding all season, and when everything is clicking for him he should be able to overpower Nishikori. The longer this match goes, the bigger Nishikori’s chances get, so the German would be wise to come out firing. I definitely expect a very close battle, with Zverev winning in four tough sets here at the French Open.
