Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev vs. Tennys Sandgren 7/1/21 Tennis Prediction

Alexander Zverev vs. Tennys Sandgren

Alexander Zverev (4) meets Tennys Sandgren in the second round of the Wimbledon on Thursday, July 1st, 2021.

Will we see another dominant performance from Alexander Zverev as he aims to make his way to the third round here, or will Tennys Sandgren come out here ready to give it his absolute best in the hopes of causing the potential upset?

Tennys Sandgren has not really performed well at Grand Slams since the 2020 Australian Open but he will want to get his best level out here at Wimbledon. In the first round, he beat Norbert Gombos in 4 sets 6-4/6-7/6-1/6-3. This was both a good and bad match for Tennys who should really be beating Gombos in 3 sets. Tennys now meets a much tougher opponent in Alexander Zverev in the second round and he cannot afford to be playing at the level he was playing at in the first two sets of his opening round match. He needs to be switched on completely.

Alexander Zverev cruised through his first round match, beating the qualifier Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets 6-3/6-4/6-1. Alexander Zverev was getting better as the match went on and he did not give any cheap points to Tallon throughout the match. Alexander will be happy with that performance and he will use the confidence from it on both his serve and forehand to improve in the next few matches in the tournament. Alexander knows he will now meet an experienced opponent in Tennys, but he will believe in himself and his game.

This is going to be the 2nd meeting between both players, with Alexander Zverev having won their only prior encounter. If this was in 2019, I would have given Tennys a chance to perhaps push this match to the edge as Zverev was not mentally strong at Grand Slams. However, with the progress that Zverev has made over the last year, I see him knowing that he should not waste any time in these early rounds to ensure he has more time to prepare for later round matches where he needs to be at his best.
