Which of these two big powerhitting players will come out on top and book their spot in the second week here in New York? Will it be the higher ranked Matteo Berrettini to show us that he can get close to the Final of yet another Grand Slam, or will it be the late blooming Ilya Ivashka who has been making a name for himself in the last couple of weeks?

Ilya Ivashka has been in very good form over the last couple of weeks, having won his maiden title on the ATP Tour right before the start of the US Open in Winston-Salem, and he has shown us that he was right to not give up on his dreams. Ilya is a great player in these conditions because he has so much power and speed in his shots, but he is going to have to meet the very strong and much more consistent and higher ranked Matteo Berrettini here at the 2021 US Open.

Matteo Berrettini had to fight through a 4-set match against the unpredictable and always entertaining Frenchman, Corentin Moutet, 7-6/4-6/6-4/6-3. Matteo is getting back into the groove as he took some time off after his superb run to the Wimbledon Final and he will know that he is getting to where he needs to be to get to his best and be ready to compete against the other top guys here in New York. However, he will have to ensure his composure is very high as he meets a similar opponent in Ivashka.

This is going to be the 3^rd meeting between both players, with Matteo Berrettini having won all of their encounters in 2 sets. Ilya can definitely make a good run in some sets here I believe, with his newfound confidence, and perhaps get a set under his belt, but I will still back the Italian to come through and get himself in the second week in New York as he continues to show us why he is nicknames the hammer with his huge serve and amazing forehand.
