Maria Sakkari of Greece will play against Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 WTA Finals. The match will be played on Tuesday November 16th, 2021 at 9:30pm.

A very exciting match is expected as in-form WTA players Maria Sakkari and Anett Kontaveit will play each other for a spot in the Final. This is a rather surprising Semi-Final line-up but fully deserved, as both women have had strong seasons in 2021. Who will get the win here and move on for a chance to become the 2021 WTA Finals champion?

Maria Sakkari has looked in great form so far here at the 2021 WTA Finals, but still needed a third and deciding match in the Group Stages to seal her place in the Semi-Finals. After cruising past Iga Swiatek in her first match, she then surprisingly lost in straight sets to Paula Badosa, needing to win a touch matchup with Aryna Sabalenka to advance. She was pushed to the limit by her Belarusian opponent (who would have advanced herself with a victory) before eventually winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 to reach this stage of the competition. Her elite movement and big groundstrokes make her a formidable opponent on any surface, and she will be liking her chances to move on to the Final.

Anett Kontaveit was one of the surprise packages of 2021, playing phenomenal tennis towards the end of the year to seal a surprising berth in the year end event. Entering this tournament on a 10 match winning streak after winning two consecutive titles, she continued that fine form by easily winning her first two Group Stage matches to seal her Semi-Final spot. She then dropped her final match to Garbine Muguruza, but her confidence will still be extremely high heading into this match. She is arguably the favorite to win this event given her fantastic form, but the experience of Sakkari will be a major hurdle here.

This is a very difficult match to predict, mainly due to Annet Kontaveit’s stunning form. One has to wonder how long she can keep this up, and she is certainly due for a bad match. That being said, it is very hard to bet against her given her recent results. After considering everything, I have decided to back Maria Sakkari to win the title. She has also been playing extremely well, and is one of the grittiest and toughest competitors on the WTA Tour. Kontaveit will be gunning for her and won’t make it easy but if it comes down to a decider as it likely will, give me the more experienced player to get the win, and that is Maria Sakkari.
