The Kazakh has long been considered an elite talent but tends to lose focus quickly, and his results have been on the decline lately. 2023 has been no kinder to him, and he has a miserable 4-14 record this season, with no signs of improvement. To make matters worse, he hasn’t been great on clay throughout his career, and this should be a very tough First Round encounter here against Daniel Elahi Galan.

Daniel Elahi Galan is also unseeded here at the Madrid Masters and is ranked 45 spots behind his opponent Alexander Bublik, at #100. Whie he is more adept than Bublik on clay, he has a poor 7-9 record on the surface over the past year and has been in poor form this season, even having to dip down to the Challenger level with mixed results. He has the game to win here, but being low on confidence will make things difficult against an experienced opponent.

This has the potential to be an ugly match, and can really go either way. Neither man has been trustworthy whatsoever over the past year, and have struggled on clay as well. I would probably recommend to stay away from this one, but if I had to choose one I would go with Bublik. If Galan was in form it would be a different story, but both have been miserable this year. I have about 60-70% confidence in Bublik winning this match and advancing here at the 2023 Madrid Masters.
