Alexander Zverev will meet Roberto Carballes Baena in the Second Round of the 2023 Madrid Masters. The match will be played on Friday April 28th, 2023.

Alexander Zverev is the 13th seed here at the Madrid Masters and is ranked 16th in the world. The German is one of the best players in the world but is currently struggling to get re-acclimatized to the tour after a long injury layoff. After mixed results so far this season, he struggled mightily last week in Munich, being upset in the First Round by Christopher O’Connell. He remains a very good player but seems to be lacking confidence at the moment, but it is only a matter of time before he gets back to the top.

Roberto Carballes Baena is unseeded here at the 2023 Madrid Masters and is ranked 53rd on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard is a very solid player on all surfaces, but considers clay his strongest. He will prove a very tough test for his opponent Alexander Zverev here, especially since the German is in slump at the moment. However, he doesn’t possess the firepower that he would need to outhit Zverev, so he will have to rely on his pinpoint accuracy and consistency to frustrate and wear him down. He was impressive in his straight-sets win over David Goffin, winning 6-4, 6-4 and will be backing himself here.

Alexander Zverev has been almost impossible to trust since his return, and I don’t suggest backing him in straight sets here, even though that would usually be the outcome. He is clearly struggling with confidence at the moment, and while I think he will win this match, the outright market is the only one that I would target significantly. Roberto Carballes Baena is a very good player, capable of causing the upset so proceed with caution. Back Zverev, but I wouldn’t lay too much until he shows us that he’s reliable again.
