Andrey Rublev will meet Stan Wawrinka in the Second Round of the 2023 Madrid Masters. The match will be played on Friday April 28th, 2023.

Andrey Rublev is the 5th seed here at the 2023 Madrid Masters and is ranked 6th in the world. The Russian has had a stellar past few weeks, including winning his maiden Masters-1000 title in Monte-Carlo. He has always been knocking on the door at big tournaments and now that he has finally broken through, he is a serious threat to win here, especially given the absence of some big names like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. He will not have liked to see Stan Wawrinka next to his name in the draw however, as the Swiss legend is capable of some magic once in a while. Despite this, Rublev is the massive favorite to advance here.

Stan Wawrinka is unseeded here at the Madrid Masters and is ranked 84th in the world. A modest 11-9 on the season, his form has slowly been on the decline as he approaches the end of his career, however he is still able to produce some moments of magic. His baseline game remains deadly, and if he can keep the points short then he is capable of causing Andrey Rublev some trouble. What is working against him however is the fact that he had a marathon three-setter in his win over Maxime Cressy in the First Round, so that must have taken a lot out of him.

This will be a fun match to watch, with plenty of thrilling tennis. However, at this stage in his career, Stan Wawrinka is no match for Andrey Rublev and I expect that the result will show that. Stan is still able to defeat some good players on a good day when fully healthy, but expecting him to beat a top 10 player like Rublev is too big of an ask. It’ll be entertaining, but I’m taking Rublev in two sets here in Madrid.
