Atlanta Open: John Isner vs. Christopher O’Connell 7/30/21 Tennis Prediction
John Isner vs Christopher O'Connell
July 30, 2021 8:00 pm EDT
Sixth seeded American John Isner will face Australian Qualifier Christopher O’Connell in the Quarter-Finals of the Atlanta Open. The Aussie has stunned the tennis world by making it this far, including a major upset along the way. Can he do it yet again and defeat the veteran American? Or will John Isner continue to dominate on home soil and reach the Semi-Finals as expected?
John Isner is the sixth seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #35 in the ATP world rankings. The big serving American has been near the top of the rankings for many years, and while he is beginning to slow down he remains a very dangerous opponent. His serve is still elite and can carry him in many matches, and his experience is nothing to discount. After surprisingly being taken to three sets in the First Round by Jeffrey Wolf, he rebounded nicely by defeating Jack Sock in straight sets, in a clinical performance. While he struggled to break serve, he was dominant on his own serve, which is usually his recipe for victory. He enters this match against Christopher O’Connell as the big favorite, but should be wary of the Aussie who has just upset the second seed Jannik Sinner in a shocking result.
Christopher O’Connell entered this event as a Qualifier, and has stunned everyone by reaching the Quarter-Finals, including a dominant straight set win over young star Jannik Sinner. Ranked a lowly 132 in the world, he is very inexperienced at this level which makes the result even more surprising. While he enters the match against John Isner as the big underdog, he is playing freely and without fear, and a second upset is not completely out of the question. As with every opponent that Isner faces, he will struggle to break serve but if he can hold his nerve and force a tiebreak, anything could happen.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and I am expecting a dominant win for the big American John Isner. While Christopher O’Connell has been outstanding here, I think that Isner’s serve, experience and the home support will be hurdles that are too large for the Aussie to overcome. He will give it his all as he has done all tournament, but I expect him to fall just short. John Isner will win here and advance to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Atlanta Open.
