Fourth seeded Ugo Humbert of France will face unseeded countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Marseille Open ATP event. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday March 10th, 2021 at 1:50pm EST.
This is sure to be a competitive fans that the fans will enjoy, between local heroes both past and present. Who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Marseille?
Ugo Humbert is currently ranked #31 and is considered one of the young stars of the ATP Tour. He has displayed flashes of immense talent but struggles to string consistent performances together. This is something he will need to work on if he is to truly enter the top-tier of men’s tennis. A very flashy lefty, he has every shot in the book and his powerful style will be quite difficult to handle on this surface. After a solid 2020 season he has started 2021 slowly, with a Quarter-Final showing at the Open Sud de France his only result of note. Despite his relatively poor start to the year he enters this match as the firm favorite.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is currently ranked #62 and is a former top 5 player in the ATP rankings. Tsonga has looked rusty since his return a couple weeks ago at the Open Sud de France, which is to be expected after such a long layoff. However, he showed flashes of his old self in his First Round win over fellow veteran Feliciano Lopez and is slowly regaining his match fitness and confidence. Against the young star Ugo Humbert Tsonga will have to serve very well to have a chance, and will definitely need to draw on his extensive experience. The veteran enters this match as the underdog but as a former champion and top five player he should never be counted out.
While Humbert is much higher ranked, this match should be closer than expected. Tsonga is a former top 5 player and is slowly regaining his fitness and form after a very long break. Humbert has all the tools at his disposal to come away with the win, but it will be tough against a very experienced player that will be sure to use every tactic in the book. I think that Tsonga can hang with the young star for a while but it is unlikely that he has the fitness at this stage to be able to close it out. Expect a close first set with Ugo Humbert eventually coming away with a tight win.
