The top two seeds meet in the Final as Roberto Bautista-Agut (1) of Spain faces Belgian David Goffin (2) at the 2021 Open Sud de France ATP Event in Montpellier. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday February 28th, 2021 at 10:00am EST. They have played each other six times throughout their careers, winning three matches each. Who will take the lead in the head to head by capturing their first title of 2021?
Number one seed Roberto Bautista-Agut has been very impressive this week and has reached the final without much trouble. After a very disappointing Australian Open campaign where he was upset in the First Round by Radu Albot, he has seemingly bounced back well, reaching the Final without dropping a set. After a tight opening set against Peter Gojowczyk, he dominated the second, returning serve well and nullifying the German’s main weapon. He has an extremely strong baseline game, with flat powerful shots from both sides. His consistency is elite and he is very hard to beat unless you can hit through him, something only the very top players can do. When he is in form he is one of the 10 best players in the world and he has displayed that this week.
David Goffin is currently ranked #15 and is on a mission to break back into the top 10 of the rankings. Like his opponent, he is a very strong baseline player that moves extremely well. He can struggle on occasion with his serve, and this is partly the reason for his recent poor performances. After a poor Australian Open he has been in mixed form this week, being one point away from elimination in the First Round against Benjamin Bonzi before recovering nicely. He had a tough match in the Semi-Final, needing three sets to overcome Egor Gerasimov in a match where he played well but served poorly, being broken on quite a few occasions. For him to win this match his serve will have to be much improved.
This match has the potential to be very close, between two players very near each other in the rankings and playing a similar game style. While Goffin has been much improved, he has not been as impressive as the Spaniard who is yet to drop a set here in Montpellier. Goffin can likely win a set, but won’t win here. RBA to win his first title of the year.
