Belinda Bencic is coming off a straight set win over Reka-Luca Jani that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 76 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her seven break points. Bencic got 59 percent of her first serves in play and saved three of her four break points. Six of Bencic’s last nine wins have been decided in straight sets. Bencic looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the eighth time in her last 11 tries. Bencic has made the third round of the French Open just once in her career. Bencic has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

Bianca Andreescu is coming off a three sets win over Ysaline Bonaventure that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Andreescu won 63 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Andreescu won 57 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 16 break points. Andreescu took over after dropping the first set and that includes winning the third set in six games. Andreescu has won four of her last six matches that have gone the distance. Andreescu looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Andreescu has never made the third round of the French Open. Andreescu has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.

These two have played once which was in the 2019 US Open semifinals, a match Andreescu won in straight sets. The match was decided in 25 games. 

This is a hell of a matchup on paper, and you can make a case for either side. With that said, I lean toward Andreescu, as she played well in the Italian Open, and she’s hitting her spots with more and more confidence. Bencic can be shaky on that second serve at times, and Andreescu is the sort of player who will attack with aggressiveness. Bencic also hasn’t had the best history at the French Open, and she’s not always comfortable on this surface.
