Tennys Sandgren vs Thiago Monteiro
October 7, 2021 4:00 pm EDT
American veteran and entertainer, Tennys Sandgren, meets the hard hitting Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro, in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday, October 7th, 2021.
Will we see a good win from Tennys Sandgren as he aims to find his confidence again and get himself back into form, or will Thiago Monteiro power his way through the American and show us why he is so hard to beat against similar ranked opponents?
Thiago Monteiro comes back to the ATP Tour after a month of playing on the Challenger Tour after the US Open. Thiago Monteiro is a very good player on his day, but he can also lost to nobody’s on a bad day. Thiago has a big and fast serve, and he is able to hit incredibly tight to the line shots from both his forehand and backhand side. Thiago will want to find some form here in Indian Wells because if he does it can set him up well for the remainder of the year, instead of playing on the Challenger Tour.
Tennys Sandgren has been struggling a lot recently, losing consistently in the first few rounds of tournaments on the ATP Tour and not being able to get himself far into any tournament to gain some confidence. Tennys is a solid player, with some amazing shots in his arsenal. However, he is not as dedicated as he should be to training in my opinion if he wants to get to the level we know he can play at consistently. However, here in the US, will the American work hard to put on a show?
Both players have met 1 time before, in a qualifying round of the Sarasota Open in 2015. Thiago won that match in 3 sets, but since then their careers have changed a lot. When comparing their accomplishments on paper, Sandgren has the egde. However, when comparing who has won more matches on the ATP Tour both in total, and this year, Thiago is the better player. Tennys will try and put on a show for the crowd, but I don’t think he has the power and stamina to keep up with the power of the Brazilian.
